About the prize

In the aftermath of severe destruction of Mosul’s heritage assets and displacement of its communities, Mosul’s heritage built environment is at risk of gradual disappearance. This prize is a part of the research project 'Preserving the Disappearing Cultural Heritage of Post-War Mosul', which aims to celebrate the heritage of Old Mosul, and to contribute towards the efforts to preserve and revive this heritage. The project involves a number of activities, including this competition: Turath competition for architectural documentation.

There are two aims from this prize:

Support and motivate the students of the University of Mosul to produce high quality documentations of heritage structures in Old Mosul.
Produce architectural documentations of heritage structures in Old Mosul to be exhibited online and in international venues to spread the architectural art of Old Mosul.

Students of the University of Mosul were invited to attend workshops and to work in groups on producing architectural documentation of a heritage structure from one of the following two categories:

Religious heritage buildings and structures in Old Mosul.
Commercial heritage buildings and structures in Old Mosul.

Participants worked in groups on producing the followings:

Architectural plans.
Architectural sections and elevations.
3D model.
Static and panoramic images and video recordings.
Short-format historical report (4000 words)
Field records showing how the structure or site was recorded (sketches, measurements by hand, measurements by digital technologies
